The fossil dipodids of the Danghe area, Gansu, were described by Bohlin (1946), allegedly from a single late Oligocene level. Due to the extremely complex tectonic disturbance of the strata in the study area, Bohlin’s age determination needs to be verified stratigraphically. In 1999 and 2001 a joint team of Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IVPP), Cultural Relic Archaeology Institute of Gansu and Gansu Province Museum made a geologic survey of the Danghe area. As a result, a number of stratigraphic problems were clarified and some new mammalian fossils were collected from stratigraphically known levels (Wang et al., 2003). Among the fossils the dipodids are one of the most abundant, including not only the taxa described by Bohlin (1946), but also 2 new species from new levels.

This paper briefly reports a new Pliocene mammalian assemblage collected from Gaotege in central Nei Mongol (Inner Mongolia), China in 2000 and 2002. The Gaotege association consists of 46 taxa referred to 41 genera, 22 families and 7 orders, including small to large sized mammals. The fauna shows close resemblance to those of the Ertemte Fauna of latest Miocene, and the Bilike and Gaozhuang faunas of early Pliocene. However, certain faunal components suggest that it is younger than the Ertemte and Bilike faunas, but somewhat older than the Gaozhuang assemblage of the upper part. It seems likely that the Gaotege association represents a new fauna in the Chinese Neogene mammal sequence, with an age of late early Pliocene (early Yushean, correlated, in European terms, with early Ruscinian or equivalent to MN15a). The Gaotege Fauna reflects a predominantly temperate steppe habitat, with local shrub and freshwater bodies, similar to the Ertemte and Bilike faunas. Faunal changes from Ertemte to Gaotege seem to reflect an environment gradually changing to drier and more grassland conditions.

A new tillodont-like mammal, Simplodon qianshanensis gen. et sp. nov., is described in the present paper. The material was collected in the Middle Paleocene of Qianshan (Chienshan) Basin , Anhui Province by the authors in 1970s.

In 1976, 1998 and 1999, vertebrate remains were collected at the second terrace along the northern and eastern banks of the Dabusu Lake (123°41′46″E, 44°43′45″N), located in the Qian’an County, Jilin Province of the People’s Republic of China. The fauna contains 19 species belonging to 6 orders, 12 families and 18 genera. The Dabusu Fauna is listed as follows: Struthio anderssoni, Marmota sp., Citellus sp., Canis lupus, Vulpes vulpes, Ursus arctos, Crocuta ultima, Panthera tigris, Mammuthus primigenius, Equus przewalskyi, E. hemionus, Coelodonta antiquitatis, Camelus knoblochi, Megaceros ordosianus, Cervus (E.) canadensis, Procapra przewalskyi, Bubalus sp., Bison exiguus, Bos primigenius. Most of the members of the Dabusu Fauna are important elements of the Mammuthus2Coelodon2 ta Fauna. So the Dabusu Fauna belongs to the Mammuthus-Coelodonta Fauna. The percentage of the extinct species in the Dabusu Fauna (36.84 %) is more than those of most other Late Pleistocene fauna , such as the Salawusu Fauna (33.3 %) (35 000aBP) , the Yushu Fauna (30 %) (31 800 ±900aBP) , the Antu Fauna ( 26 %) ( 30 000aBP), the Yanjiagang Fauna (25.9 %) (20 000aBP) , the Zhoukoudian Top Cave Fauna (12 %) (18 000aBP) , and the Qingshantou Fauna (8 %) (10 900aBP) , less than that of the Dingcun Fauna (5813 %) (90 000~60 000aBP) . However, the above relative ages based on the percentage of the extinct species do not wholly coordinate the 14C dating result of the Dabusu Fauna (20 530aBP), which should be studied further. Unlike the typical Mammuthus-Coelodonta Fauna, the members of the dry and cold prairie, such as Coelodonta antiquitatis, Equus przewalskyi, E. hemionus, and i etc., account for 52.63 % in the whole Dabusu Fauna. So during the age of the Dabusu Fauna, the climate was drier and colder than that of the most other Late Pleistocene faunas, which was similar to that of the Qingshantou Fauna near Dabusu. The analysis of the spore-pollen samples from the strata of the Dabusu Formation where the remains of the fauna were unearthed, shows nearly the same result of the climate trend during the period of the Dabusu Fauna.
